Tweet Street Park

Tweet Street Park is an urban park uniquely designed to make Downtown more livable for people and birds. This linear park and trail system is adorned with numerous hand-crafted birdhouses.

Located on Date Street between Seventh and Ninth Avenues in the Cortez Hill Neighborhood, Tweet Street Park is a remnant of Balboa Park, which once extended into the Cortez area. The Park is linear and an average of 30’ wide and a total of 1,800 feet in length, with approximately 900 feet on Date Street and 900 feet on Tenth Avenue. The Park  provides a green landscaped buffer between the Cortez Hill neighborhood and the freeway, and contains features such as sidewalks, curved walking paths, a play area for small children, benches for sitting, litter receptacles, and pet rest area facilities.

The most unique feature of the park is the aviary theme that will include whimsical birdhouses which combine function with artistic innovation. These birdhouses were designed to attract birds native to San Diego, particularly the Bewick’s Wren. The birdhouses were constructed by artists, designers and architects under the guidance and direction of bird experts.

The plans for Tweet Street/Cortez Hill Park are in line with the proposed plans for downtown open space. The Downtown Community Plan calls for adding more than 50 acres of open space to the existing 75 acres. The implementation strategy prioritizes the development of seven new major public open spaces, which will act as the nuclei for the various neighborhoods, putting every downtown resident within a five- to ten-minute walk of public open space.  Click here for more details of this park.  and here
