Sheriff Kolender is an active member of or on the Board of Directors of several community-based, law enforcement and charitable organizations, such as the San Diego County Police Chiefs’ and Sheriff’s Association and Training & Education for Retarded Individuals (TERI).

Over the course of his career, Kolender served as appointee of the Governor on the California Board of Corrections, two terms for the Governor as a Commissioner on the State of California’s Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST), serving as Chair for the year 2001-02; board member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) past president of the Major City Police Chiefs’ Association; Chairman of the Task Force that integrated the San Diego City Schools; past president of the San Diego Police Officers’ Association; and the California Council on Criminal Justice (CCCJ), among others.  He also served for eight years on the California Community Colleges Board of Governors and as their president.
