38th Annual Bay Parade of Lights Poinsettia Bowl Battle of the Bands in the Gaslamp Quarter The marching bands from each of the competing schools in the Poinsettia Bowl will be in a musical showdown on 5th Avenue just prior to the big game at Qualcomm Stadium. it will take place on Monday 21 December and for additional information www.gaslamp.org / 233-5227. "America's largest Balloon Parade" The
Port of San Diego Big Bay Balloon Parade
returns to downtown on Wednesday 30
December just after the 5K Holiday Bowl
Run and just prior to the Holiday Bowl
Game itself. Harbor Drive will
be restricted on that day starting at
7:45am. The actual start time of the
parade is 10am. For additional

Lunch & Learn Series Continues
The Downtown Sound Bites
Speaker Series is held
on the first Tuesday of
every month
from noon-1pm at the
Downtown Information
Center (DIC) in Horton
Plaza. The DIC is
located just above the
CVS drug store between
Victoria's Secret and
Sam Goody's. You are
asked to bring your
own lunch to this free
event and then listen
and learn from a variety
of interesting speakers
all of whom will
approach issues that are
important to downtown's
future. A question and
answer period will
follow each
presentation. The event
sponsor is CCDC and

next scheduled event in
the series is on Tuesday
5 January and the
featured speaker will be
Jimmy Parker, Executive
Director of the Gaslamp
Quarter Association who
will present an up to
date insiders view of
what is happening new in
the Gaslamp Quarter.
Help design a New Downtown Fire Station Downtown residents, businesses and property owners are invited to attend a community meeting to kick off the design of the new Bayside Fire Station which will be located at the southeast corner of Cedar Street and Pacific Highway. The meeting will include presentations by the project's design team that is headed by architect Rob Quigley and public artists Chuck Moffit, Ingram Ober and Marisol Rendón-Ober. A question & answer period and then a comment session will follow the presentations. It will take place on Saturday 9 January from 9 to 10:30am at the San Diego Firehouse Museum, 1572 Columbia Street. Registration for this event is not required. Mayor Jerry Sanders will give his annual
State of the City Address at the Balboa
Theatre on Wednesday 13 January starting
at 6pm. The theatre is located on the
northeastern edge of Horton Plaza at 868
Fourth Avenue at the corner of E
Street. Immediately following the
address there will be a reception at the
US Grant Hotel with a no host bar. For

Friends of San Diego Architecture Continues its Annual Lecture Series
The Friends of San Diego
Architecture continues its 2009-2010
lecture series with
The San Diego Housing
Ladder: Integrating Opportunities for
All on Saturday 16
January. The speakers will be Susan
Tinsky and Elizabeth Morris who are
housing experts. The lectures all take
place at the New School of Architecture
and Design, 1249 F Street at 9:30am on
the third Saturday of the month eight
times a year and are open to the
public. They are not held in June,
July, August and December. For further

To help celebrate San Diego's diversity the
Twelfth Annual Multicultural Festival will
be held on Saturday 16 January. This
family-friendly festival will showcase San
Diego's cultural diversity. At the festival
will be live entertainment, food stations,
vendors, educational booths and other
activities. This event is free and open to
the public and is held along the Martin
Luther King Promenade between Market Street
and Fourth Avenue starting at 11am and
ending at 5pm. Additional information

Last years festival was attended by more
than 25,000 people.
New Urban Performance Co-Operative Opens
The new Aire fitness center is located
at 1014 Fifth Avenue. Its main focus is
on classes including yoga, pilates
cycling and indoor rowing. They are
extending an offer for downtown
residents to see what they have to offer
at two open houses on either Wednesday
20 January from 5:30-7:30 or Sunday
31 January from 2-4pm. During the open
house guests will be able to checkout
the facility while enjoying wine and
appetizers, as well as a chances to win

Parkside Terrace will
be opening on Thursday 21 January.
It is a six-story building with 76
affordable units and 13,000 square
feet of commercial space that will
be occupied by the East Village
Community Church. The developer is
Wakeland Housing. It is located at

Free Downtown bus tours offer close-up views of downtown's unique neighborhoods and highlight recently completed and upcoming new projects.
